Make a Connection School & Student Awards go to Luton school

19 July 2004

Denbigh High School in Luton and Year 9 student, Coral Wells-Porter (14), were honoured in the annual Make a Connection School & Student Awards today. The prizes, awarded by Sophie Wood, Programme Coordinator, from the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) and supported by Nokia, rewarded Coral for her leadership skills and her school for its outstanding achievements in teaching life skills and citizenship.

'Denbigh High School has worked hard to foster a really positive school environment where there is a strong sense of valuing and respecting individuals,' Sophie Wood explained. 'Coral has stood out for her leadership skills within the school community and we are really pleased to recognise her achievements and the work of the school with these awards.'

The programme behind the awards, Make a Connection, provides teacher training and a life skills classroom resource for citizenship and personal development for 11 to 14 year olds. Through active lessons young people learn to connect with themselves; with others and with the community and develop the vital life skills young people need for living in today’s society.

Adrian Miller, Head of Year 9 at Denbigh High School believes that ‘Make a Connection has been tremendous in raising the self-esteem of our Year 9 students. They have been engaged in learning from each other and the teaching material to become better citizens’.
